The Inner Fort

The name "Bhitarwar" roughly translates to "inner fort" or "inner citadel." The region is historically linked to the majestic Bhitarwar Fort, established in the 16th century by the Hanselia Jat ruler, Raja Berajshah. Its ruins stand today as a silent testament to its fortified past.

Ancient Sacred Mandirs

Bhitarwar holds deep religious significance. The Dhumeshwar Mahadev Temple, dating back to the Nagvanshi era and completely rebuilt by King Veer Singh Dev (1605-1627), is famous for its Shivalinga that miraculously emerged from the Parvati River, alongside an ancient 500ft waterfall.

The revered Lakheshwari Mata Mandir (near village Chitoli) forces devotees to climb over 700 steps to a 460-ft elevated hill surrounded by dense forest, where legend says King Nala originally established the idol. Other important temples include Goleshwar Mahadev Mandir and the intricate Pareek Temple Complex.
